Effective Dental Hygiene Scheduling With a Plan
Effective dental hygiene scheduling starts with a plan. What do we want our hygiene schedule to consist of? Where do our sealant patients go? What is the best time for active periodontal treatment? And is there a best place for elder as well as child care?
These are all great questions. Your answers will vary from another practice. Based on your specific needs and patient demographics. But every practice needs a plan. A hygiene schedule template to guide the team.

Our Patient Conversations Are Pretty Much The Same From Day to Day! Here's How You Can Improve Patient Relationships & Boost Production:
Effective Patient Communication
Communicate your reschedule policy when scheduling every hygiene appointment. Take the time to confidently explain that your doctor does ask for a 48-hour notice to reschedule an appointment. And ask your patient if they can do that for you.
There is less chance for misunderstandings with solid communication skills. Make eye contact with your patient during this conversation. Smile and get their commitment to your doctor’s request. Note this is your doctor’s request! Call in the big guns.
Effective Dental Hygiene Scheduling Use A Solid Confirmation System
Send reminder postcards the month before scheduled hygiene appointments. Yes, this is old school. But it works well. Use postcards that advertise your business. Design your own. Capture your patient’s attention. It’s a great reminder!
Then send your text and email reminders 2 weeks before scheduled appointments. With a sentence to encourage patients to call now should they need to reschedule.
Finally, a phone confirmation (or text & email) 2 business days before the appointment. With any unconfirmed appointments removed from the schedule completely. There are no excuses for unconfirmed appointments at this point.
